Walking the talk!
Poynton and District Rotarian Peter Hale raised over £3000 walking the Pennine Way last summer. For those of you unfamiliar with the trail, it's about 270 miles - a long haul.
Peter walked on his own, setting off with great gusto and covering 34 miles in the first day. He suffered for that brave impetuous start the day after and quickly revised his plan to allow himself to ease into the challenge on a gradual basis, building up the number of miles covered as the days passed. He was lucky with the weather with it staying fine most days.
Occasionally he was joined by fellow Rotarian Walter Thomas and a few other friends for a day's walk. At Dufton, about the half-way point, Peter's walking boots gave up the ghost. There was no shop nearby and emergency repairs were called for. He managed to persuade his boots to last another day until happily he found a shop in Alston and was able to buy replacements. All then went well until the final day when his glorious finish was dampened with a downpour.
Nothing can water down Peter's achievement though. Peter donated the funds he raised to Disaster Aid UK & Ireland. The money will be put to good use providing humanitarian aid quickly to people devastated by disasters such as those currently taking refuge in the Horn of Africa from drought, famine and war.
Mike Davies, Chair of Disaster Aid UK & Ireland, thanks Peter for his tremendous achievement.
